Album Review: Maya Jane Coles “Fabric 75”

Although she’s only 26, Maya Jane Coles proved herself a force to be reckoned with in the music industry long ago. The British/Japanese producer and DJ has received critical acclaim for her work across a range of genres, including dubstep (under her Nocturnal Sunshine alias) and electronic dub as She Is Danger with Lena Cullen. She is perhaps best known for her work producing and DJing her signature rich and textured style of house.

Now, the multi award-winning audio engineer embarks on a new chapter in her artist career with a remarkable entry into the fabric series. With Fabric 75, Maya has put together a stunning summer soundtrack that combines sun dappled melodies with deep rhythmic percussion all the way through.

“Fabric was one of the first clubs that I partied at, so it’s quite mad to have gone from being a punter to a headliner, playing the midnight set at NYE and now my own Fabric mix. It feels like the club has been symbolic in the evolution of my career with a lot of good memories and milestones,” says Maya.

Given the album’s spectacular reception after the official release date, Fabric’s record label has announced its plan to commit two of the compilation’s standout tracks to wax as part of its 10″ vinyl sampler series.

Created by Maya specifically for Fabric 75, the lead track “Premonition” is a hypnotizing and pensive piece that sets delicate, fragile notes over a driving groove. The melody is melancholy yet faintly optimistic, and when juxtaposed with such an intense bass line it gives the track that striking introspective depth for which Maya is so well known.

On the B-side of the record is “Dissolute,” an earthy piece by London-based up and comer Paride Saraceni that counters driving tribal percussion with vaulting synths and irresistibly sensual vocals.  Strictly limited to just 300 copies, the 10” vinyl sampler is available exclusively to FabricFirst members. ★★★★✩
