Denver Weekend Preview: September 5 to 7, 2014

DJOYbeat Event Spotlight

Porter Robinson @ The Fillmore Theater

Even though he’s only 21, the EDM community marvels at the seemingly overnight success of Porter Robinson. After being discovered by Skrillex and releasing the Spitfire EP, the trajectory of his growth as a musician aligned conveniently with popular music trends – and his new album, Worlds, is no different. Timed perfectly with the current shift towards deep/future/tropical house, the album (and tour of its namesake) spans across several BPMs with lush, cerebral progressions and ethereal sound design.

The Weekend Rundown

Bassic Fridays ft. Skism, Subliminal, Curelyone & Caustic and P.U.N.C.H.I.S. @ Beta Nightclub

A bass music giant since before the movement broke into the mainstream, DJ/producer and Never Say Die label owner Skism will headline Beta Nightclub’s main floor on this weekend’s edition of Bassic Fridays. He hasn’t disappointed fans with recent tracks like the visceral “Experts,” and additional support from locals Subliminal and Curelyone & Caustic as well as the P.U.N.C.H.I.S. artists in the Beatport Lounge will round out the event’s entertainment.

JackLNDN, Sam Warren and John Arnold @ Bar Standard

As the whole scene turns on its head and favors the soothing sounds of deep house, Bar Standard’s Home Denver-hosted Friday dance parties continue to find headlining artists that challenge the one-dimensional status quo. Trained classically, Jack Aisher A.K.A. JackLNDN studied music at Windsor Castle for the Queen in Berkshire, England before discovering dance music and becoming a house music mastermind. Sam Warren and John Arnold will play supporting sets.

STS9 @ Red Rocks Amphitheater

Even if you think that they sound like elevator music or were put off by them missing a Colorado gig due to a temporary breakup earlier in the year, you can’t deny that Sound Tribe Sector 9 has made its mark on the greater Denver metro area. Considering their memorable warehouse parties in the outskirts of Boulder, this monumental two-day affair will surely draw a varied crowd to Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Proper Saturdays ft. Michael Woods, Dragon & Sang Dinh and Mahesh Presents @ Beta Nightclub

Before Michael Woods ever came to associate with the likes of Deadmau5, Kaskade or Lady Gaga, he made his mark under the stage name “Warrior” in 2000 with the release of a single of the same title. His brand of progressive house will be complimented by the sounds of locals Dragon and Sang Dinh as well as the artists of Mahesh Presents upstairs in the Beatport Lounge.

Sian and Christian Martin, Will Raidle and Rose Hips @ Club Vinyl

Another in the legendary series of Saturday parties at Club Vinyl put on by The Hundred, this installment will feature a headlining tag-team set by Sian and Christian Martin – A Dublin-born techno prodigy and tech house Dirtybird signee, respectively. Will Raidle and Rose Hips will add some local flair to the set list.

Norad Underground Presents Dance Therapy ft. M.A.N.D.Y. @ TBA

Since Norad Dance Bar’s space on 22nd and Champa was outbid at the end of owner Preston Douglas’ lease earlier this year, the team has put their parties on hold – but this warehouse party kicks off a series of events at locations undisclosed until the day of that will bring the underground flavor of their dance parties to various spots throughout the city. M.A.N.D.Y. will headline the night, and in true old school rave fashion, much of the entertainment will not be announced before the party.
