New York City Weekend Preview: July 17 to 20, 2014

DJOYbeat Spotlight

Flume @ Terminal 5, July 17 and 18, 2014

Flume sold out New York City at a rapid pace. So much so that a third show was added to Wednesday night. Be sure to catch night two and/or three of the crunky, sexy beat goodness that the Aussie is known for spitting out on a habitual basis. If you don’t have tickets by now, get ready to pay out the butt on Craigslist or Stubhub (Try Reddit instead).

The Weekend Rundown

Thursday, July 17

INPUT | Grum, Cut Snake @ Output

If you are heading to Williamsburg, get set to start the weekend with some quality house. When the duo of Cut Snake get on, watch out. Their mix of new and older-sounding house should give all in attendance at least a taste of what they are looking for the most.

Jean Pierre – Dance.Here.Now & Nervous Event @ Cielo

Get ready for another batch of quality house. This time, Cielo brings us New York’s own Jean Pierre. If you’re looking for a fill of house and some techno make Cielo your spot on the 17th. Cielo always runs a high chance of having a live crowd for house. Expect the same if the weather doesn’t rain the night out.

Zeitgeist: Viceroy, Air Zaire, Headband + Hooligan and Alex English @ Verboten

If the night is anything like Viceroy’s new single “The Life,” be prepared for a night of summery feel good vibes. It may not be for everyone. But for those that get down on the fun, poppy vibes Verboten should be an ideal landing spot for you on Thursday.

Also Consider: Rhythm Review @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s, Fixed and Popgun present: Jon Hopkins + The Range @ Le Poisson Rouge, Deluxe: A Downtown Social with Ron Like Hell @ Gin Palace

Friday, July 18

Plaid @ Le Poisson Rouge
us-0717-613596-358433-front

The guys in Plaid

Chilled electronic comes to town courtesy of London’s Plaid. If you’re okay with a downbeat kind of Friday, Plaid has you covered. You can still move, but it all comes in waves. Plaid’s sets are equal parts body moving and baby making music.

Sleepy & Boo + Friends @ Marquee

One of NYC’s most consistent duos are Sleepy & Boo. Techno, with hints of house throughout, the duo take pride in saying they can rock any stage. Occupancy isn’t an issue for this duo. They’ll have you moving like it’s nothing.

Feel The Spirit with Jellybean Benitez @ Union Square Ballroom

Nothing like Feel The Spirit to be the name behind soulful house producer Jellybean Benitez. When so many want us to go ‘von deeper’ Jellybean is doing so by putting that old school house fire in the tracks. With a little Spanish vibes into some tracks and the soul starts to flow out of you. Let Jellybean make your soul glow Friday night.

Cameo and Fixed present: Medlar with JDH & Dave P @ Cameo Gallery

UK’s Medlar makes his U.S. debut at Cameo. 1/3 of the resident WOLF producers, expect a wide variety of music from the project Medlar has been creating. He’s been killing deep house for the past few years. Let’s see what he has for the U.S. this time around.

Adrian Lux @ Pacha

If you like big room in NYC, Pacha is one you have to consider. The overpacked crowds and spotty staff (including pretentious promoters and the occasional equal-opportunity security groper) turn some away. Others don’t experience that stuff or don’t care. Pacha can be fun on certain nights. Adrian Lux brings the kind of big room that will make it near impossible to not be in a good mood.

Also Consider: FXHE 10 Year Anniversary Party with Omar S, Luke Hess, OG Ignitt, Max Essa and Dennis Kane @ Output, Subversions: Matthew Dear, Trus’ Me and Ryan Elliot @ Verboten, Official BLU Party @ Sankeys NYC, Set List presents Tyler Sherritt @ CieloAndy C @ Webster Hall

Saturday, July 19

EC Twins & DJ Politik @ Marquee

Try not to dance at Marquee on Saturday. Go ahead, do it. Bet you’ll have a hard time. EC Twins are sure to bring the prog house that so many are thirsty for. DJ Politik will switch it up with some high energy remixes and originals that should have you flying on cloud 9 the entire time.

Eliot Lipp @ Glasslands Gallery
Eliot Lipp

Eliot Lipp

Eliot Lipp’s brand of electronic is oozing with goodness and variety. One second, the track sounds like it’s going deep. Next thing you know, you are on a near overload of danceable, joyous electronic. Expect more of that as he takes the decks in Brooklyn on Saturday.

Technoir presents Samo Sound Boy + Karl Kling (of RAC) @ Slake

Samo Sound Boy’s brand of “body high” music should fit right in with Karl Kling’s brand of pop meets electronica good vibes. New York seems to have been bitten full on by the positive summer vibes. If you need a boost in that department this weekend, head to Slake.

dBerrie @ Lavo

If Webster isn’t your scene, but you still want to same kind of sound, head to Lavo. If you check his Soundcloud, dBerrie is listed as house. When you listen to his music it’s pure progressive and hard hitting electro house.

Vato Gonzalez @ Webster Hall

Saturday’s at Webster means the brightest colors will be on and the beats will be big. With Vato on the decks, expect some of that Dutch progression to be on full display. It may not be the most original set you hear this weekend, but it will hit like no other might be able to.

Also Consider: Samba in the City feat. Samba Mais @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s, TOCA NYC | Les Carbonell, Francesca Magliano @ Cielo, Kaviar Roof Club with Mike Simonetti, Cooper Saver, Beto Cravioto and Travmatic on The Roof @ Output, Argot Showcase with Steve Mizek, Policy, Gunnar Haslam, Octo Octa (Live) @ Cameo Gallery

Sunday, July 20

Gary Beck @ Output

Looking for some uplifting, slightly old school techno? Head to Output. Gary Beck will be one of the weekend’s top options for a feel good set if you’re not looking to go big room. Once again, kudos to Output for putting on stellar house.

Push The Night: Henry Saiz [DJ Set] and King Unique @ Verboten

With the release of Reality Addendum Henry Saiz should be bringing a killer set of electronic to Verboten. Add in some shoegaze dirtiness from King Unique and the night should be rounded out pretty nicely. Verboten, come for the brunch. Stay for the badass sets.

In The Garden with Boris Werner @ The Paper Box

Sunday is house day in New York. Or, deep house is everywhere these days. Either way, head to The Paper Box to hear Amsterdam’s Boris Werner varying house set. If it’s anything like his Mysteryland USA set, this will be trippy and sending you on a mental journey. What a way to close out another weekend in the city.

Also Consider: Mister Sunday @ Industry City, Sundays on The Roof with Resolute Feat. Avatism, Mr C, Mass Prod, Stefny and Connie @ Output, Most Excellent Été D’amour with Roy Davis Jr. & More @ Le Bain
