New York City Weekend Preview: July 31 to August 3, 2014

DJOYbeat Spotlight

Feed Me, Treasure Fingers @ Terminal 5, Saturday, August 2

This show has all the potential to be incredible. If you haven’t been to a Feed Me show yet, GO! That can’t be stressed enough. If you’ve been to a Feed Me show, GO AGAIN! Adding Treasure Fingers on top of this only makes the night that much better. Expect killer sets. T5 could get packed, so expect the worst. Hopefully it won’t be all that crowded.

The Weekend Rundown

Thursday, July 31

Ace Alvarez – Nervous Records & Dance.Here.Now Event @ Cielo

Cielo goes techno on Thursday with the help of New York’s own Ace Alvarez. With Ace working the decks it is time to lay down some serious sounds. This one is going to get intense.

Zeitgeist: Goldroom [DJ set], Headband + Hooligan, Alex English @ Verboten

Things could very well get all dream poppy at Verboten. With Goldroom dropping a DJ set you could be in for some mixed up pop and a quick flashback into the past. Start your weekend off with some good vibes courtesy of Josh Legg.

INPUT | Moombahton Massive with Nadastrom, Sabo, Otto Von Schirach @ Output

Moomba! If more moomba was in the world, it’d be a lot dirtier of a place — in a good way, of course. Good bass will be in a surplus at Output on Thursday. Be part of it. You never know when moomba will get a feature like this at a venue again.

Also Consider: Trippy Turtle @ Glasslands Gallery, Toque Profundo @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s

Friday, August 1st

3LAU | #LOSEITFRIDAYS | Friday August 1 @ Pacha

Stop if you’ve heard this before, but Pacha is pretty much known for the big room. Yeah, they place all the styles but that place is big room through and through. No knocking it, just calling it like it mostly is. With 3lau coming through, expect more of the same, but in a good way. 3lau knows how to make good prog. Go, expect good music and big crowds.

Neon Indian (DJ) with The Great Void, Ta$$y @ Cameo Gallery

The stripped down band thing seems to be the move of the summer this year. Last week it was Capital Cities. This week you can double down on the action with Neon Indian spinning to their hometown crowd in BK. Find out what Neon Indian is like without the instruments.

Wolf + Lamb @ Marquee

Gadi and Zev are Wolf + Lamb. What they are more, though, are adventurers of the New York underground scene. Their work has brought about some original tracks and an inspired music label. Check out the Brooklyn boys at Marquee to see what they are all about.

Escort (DJ Set), Tony Quattro @ Glasslands Gallery

Another rare DJ set to check out! Escort is known to play funky, disco-driven tracks. If you are looking for more classic sounding disco with some updated beats, Escort could be your show. Add Tony Quattro’s headbanging energy and you’ve got yourself covered for the night.

Posso @ Lavo

The L.A. ladies of Posso bring the electro house to Manhattan on Friday. They step out of their wheelhouse for some dirty electro, hip-hop and bass bangers. Check out Lavo for a little variety on Friday.

Also Consider: Breach, Worthy, Anna Lunoe, Cry Baby and Slap + Tickle DJs @ Verboten, Taimur & Fahad @ Cielo, Spektrum – Paolo Rocco, Perry, Nick Vermeire @ Sankeys NYC, My Nu Leng, Etnik, Abu Ashley and Justin Miller @ Output

Saturday, August 2

brite nites feat. Dannic @ Webster Hall

If Pacha is known for prog then, well, so is Webster for the most part. Brite Nites and Dannic go together like douchey promoters and unfulfilled promises. Unless you’re a douchey promoter, don’t take that as a knock. Dannic will most likely blow the roof off. Thankfully, Webster is big enough to handle it.

Ladyhawke (DJ Set) @ Glasslands Gallery

Ok, you may need to pick which rare DJ sets you’re checking out this weekend. Auckland’s usually electro pop Ladyhawke turns up the electro on Saturday for the crowd at Glasslands. Check this one out. Glasslands is a solid venue and Ladyhawke should be an interesting set to check out.

Urulu @ Verboten

Verboten takes us to a house set with some tech thrown in. L.A.’s Urulu comes to town with his evocative, emotive sets aimed to give you that classic feel. Will it work on you? Gotta head to Verboten to find out…

Tiki Disco on The Roof with Lloydski, Andy Pry and Eli Escobar @ Output

Tiki disco? On a roof? Questions? Output puts on some of the city’s best shows. Expect more of the same at the tiki disco. Get dressed up. Or don’t. You know there will be some pretentious person in the crowd not going along. Either way, go and dance your ass off. This time, your grass skirt won’t be ironic!

Thomas Gold @ Governors Beach Club

This bill looks blistering! If you like prog house, you should be on the island for this one. Governors Beach Club is churning out big names for their summer sets. With a killer support cast (check them out!), this one should be nonstop progression in all the best ways.

Also Consider: Vibal: Tedd Patterson @ Cielo, Le Bain presents Disco Nights @ Le Bain

Sunday, August 3

Harvey McKay (Drumcode) @ Cielo

Cielo keeps the techno going this weekend with Harvey McKay closing out. Expect some deep techno, dark beats and an old school vibe that will be hard to find elsewhere. A lot of places might not be able to do this kind of show right, but at Cielo you should be in good hands.

Sundays on The Roof with Daniele Baldelli, Metro Area (DJ Set) and Cem G @Output

House and funk should be on full display Sunday. If the tiki thing isn’t your scene, check out the non-tiki rooftop experience. With Daniele on the decks you should get a dose of funk with Metro Area will satisfy your lower key funk desires with a little house to throw in.

Seth Troxler and The Martinez Brothers @ Governors Beach Club

Here’s hoping the Beach Club can turn things around fast. A day after Thomas Gold and Co. comes a different kind of awesome. Seth Troxler has been throwing down some of the most consistently creative mixes. Check him and the Martinez Brothers for all your deep needs. What a way to end the weekend.
