New York City Weekend Preview: June 19 to 22, 2014

DJOYbeat Spotlight

Little Dragon @ Terminal 5, Fri/Sat June 20 & 21

One show in New York wasn’t enough for the Gothenburg group. The massive venue sold out with so much demand left over that a second show was added. By now, most of you are familiar with Little Dragon. If not, get ready to dance your ass off with fun blends of original electronic music. The vibes will be ranging from chilled with a slight bit of darkness to full on dancey.

Best of luck grabbing tickets if you’re still looking. Both shows are now sold out. The $30 ticket price is probably skyrocketing on StubHub as you read this.

The Weekend Rundown

Thursday, June 19

Roger Sanchez @ Cielo

It’s been said here before, and it’ll be said again: Cielo is one of the best spots for good house music. With Roger Sanchez headlining the decks, Thursday will be no different. For a sick blend of tech and house, Cielo is the place to be. There have been “Thirsty Thursday” crowds there on some Thursdays in the past, but, with school over, that crowd should hopefully be off to somewhere else for the night.

Star Slinger, Tony Quattro with Poolside (DJ Set) @ Output

Output’s weekly INPUT weekday dance party is back featuring Manchester’s Star Slinger. Joining Star Slinger will be LA’s Poolside and Tony Quattro for a night of upbeat, chilled vibes. There won’t be many other ideas to kick off the weekend earlier than being at Output Thursday night.

System of Survival/Adam Collins/Cry Baby and more @ Verboten

Verboten and House on Mute come together for a 21+ show to start the weekend. Veteran Adam Collins will be joined by underground star Cry Baby. This should be a solid night of underground electronic. With tickets at only $10 you will have trouble finding anything close to this good a deal.

Also Consider:

Pixelated @ The Panther Room, Delhi 2 Dublin @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s, Thug Entrancer with Prism House, Octo Octa @ Cameo Gallery, Rvdiovctive with J Paul Getto & OP @ Cameo Gallery

Friday, June 20

Lil Jon & Vice @ Pacha

Pacha, get ready for some big room hip hop and progressive on Friday night. Vice and Lil Jon should combine for a night of crunk and moving progressive. Lil Jon is known for bringing the party, and you know you’re gonna be hearing “Turn Down for What” at some point in the night. Get there early. Pacha is going to be packed.

Kygo @ Webster Hall

As Diplo said about Kygo, “He keeps it around 100 bpm. He keeps it sexy.” That’s Kygo for you. His sound might be a bit off the usual Webster Hall room vibe but that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Get in the mode for a night of sexy vibes by listening to Kygo’s Diplo and Friends mix from a few months back.

Pleasurekraft @ Marquee

Pleasurekraft is all about “Making music for dancing and other physical indulgences…” If you’re looking for a night of sexy music (Kygo is a bit too chilled) head to Marquee. Pleasurekraft switches between chilled, sexy house music and more traditional deep and tech. Judging from the name, you know what your night is going to be filled with.

#Occupynightlife Presents: Kryder + Sevag @ Cielo

Local progressive artist, Sevag, joins London’s Kryder for a packed night of progressive. Cielo is good for a straight up house show. Some might think their intimate room might not be able to hold a progressive crowd. If you think that, do yourself a favor and check out Cielo on Friday. You’ll probably be surprised.

Maya Jane Coles/George Fitzgerald/Alex Arnout @ Verboten

This one has people talking. Maya Jane Coles coming to Verboten fits too perfectly. The club has been gaining a steadier name ever since its roots in Brooklyn were firmly planted. With Coles dub meets electronic style on display, the night should go off without a hitch. Adding George Fitzgerald to the bill makes this bill incredibly hard to pass up.

Also Consider:

Anthea & Franklin De Costa @ Sankeys NYC, Sauced @ Passion Lounge, Telepathic Intersection: Gavin Russom @ Glasslands Gallery, Livio & Roby @ The Panther Room, Punch Drunk Love with Frank & Tony/ Bob Moses @ Output.

Saturday, June 21

Ladytron (DJ Set) @ Drom

Disco, electro and new wave will be on full display at Drom courtesy of Ladytron. The English act has been at it for years. With a knack for not using a laptop (to see the crowd) the night will be especially focused on the audience. Drom has had mixed reviews from crowds in the past, so proceed with slight club caution.

Cassy @ Output

Output. House music. Quality stuff. That’s pretty much how almost every Output event can be summed up. Saturday night will be no different from Cassy, Just Be and the entire bill. The Panther Room will be alive as well from Hunter/Game and Stephanie. Grab advance tickets for only $20.

Paco Osuna @ Verboten
Forward Disco presents Nutritious & Brian Burnside @ Cielo

Forward Disco brings the disco to Cielo, where the vibe should be perfect. This is going to be a new meets old kind of funky night. Nutritious will have you feeling like you fell back to the ’70s while Brian Burnside has you feeling positive through some deep tech.

Mister Saturday Night @ The Bell House

Thrown inside an actual house, Mister Saturday Night will be a trip of a night. If you were able to get the early tickets, you will be treated to dinner and live string music to start at 8pm. At 10pm, the basement will open up and the night will begin. A few late tickets were just released for 11pm entry. Be sure to grab them if you can.

Also Consider:

Brite Nites feat. Marco V @ Webster Hall, Valentin Stip with Justin Miller @ Cameo Gallery, Midnight High, Saint Rocco and more @ Slake, Shade: Shame @ Secret BK Location

Sunday, June 22

Benny Benassi and Friend feat. Audien, Tommie Sunshine and more @ Governor’s Beach Club

Last week it was Laidback Luke and friends. This week, Manhattan gets Benny Benassi. The legend himself will be joined by long time EDM veteran Tommie Sunshine and Audien. Last time Audien was in town, he shut down Webster Hall. With all these guys and a few more guests on the bill, your Sunday should be set.

Tony Touch present Funkbox with A.C Randum & Blacklauren @ Le Poisson Rouge

Described as a “Dancer’s Haven,” Funkbox is a weekly party hosted by Tony Touch. Tony will take you through some of deep houses’s best. With celebrity DJs joining him weekly, it’s always a good time. This week, A.C Randum & Blacklauren join him as the party kicks off at 9pm.

Verboten Brunch: Vague with Maayan Nidam/Vera and more @ Verboten

The noon series is back in the Cabaret Bar. This time, Vague NYC is joining the fold to bring you the action. Free admission and brunch are served until 8pm. Reach out to Verboten for drink and group specials.

Also Consider:

Jillian Jensen, Wind In Sails, Sienna @ Slake, Mister Sunday @ Industry City, Sundays on The Roof with Uner/Jon Charnis/Michael Christopher @ Output
