New York City Weekend Preview: June 5 to 8, 2014

 DJOYBeat Spotlight

Disclosure (DJ Set), Kaytranada, Jubilee @ Output, Thursday June 5

Last time Disclosure came through to Output the venue was a packed mess. On stage, the Lawrence brothers killed it like they are known to do. As long as Output has got the foot traffic issue somewhat under control, the crowd issue shouldn’t be as big as it was last time. With Kaytranada and Jubilee dropping sets be prepared for a full-on funky onslaught.

As always, anyone new to Output needs to remember the no photo policy. Unlike most venues, you won’t be allowed to snap selfies on the floor. Like any other Output set, this is about the music.

The Weekend Rundown

Thursday, June 5

Peanut Butter Wolf @ Glasslands Gallery

Stones Throw’s founder will bring his interesting, funky groove to Brooklyn for the night. His A/V sets have been known to have a personal touch to them that should up the fan connection a bit more. Go check him out if you’re looking for something to do. PB Wolf is awesome.

Dance.Here.Now. presents Jewel Kid // Sebastian Manuel @ Cielo

With a decade in the game, Jewel Kid has established himself as a killer house producer. Then, it’s no surprise to see him at Cielo. When the house grooves are going at full tilt, Cielo is the best place to be. House may be his specialty, but don’t be surprised to see the Kid drop some different stuff in there to keep you on your toes.

Bhangra in the City @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s in New York

Looking for something different to put in your ears on Thursday? Consider Bhangra and it’s bass heavy bangers. Combining parts Bollywood and club bangers, this is some good, heavy hitting music. Expand your horizons  bit and check this one out if you haven’t before.

Also Consider: Johnny Deepp (Downpitch) / Manuel Napoleon / Secret Guests @ TBA Brooklyn, Deep Disco @ Babel Lounge

Friday, June 6

1-800-Dinosaur with James Blake (DJ Set), Airhead, Dan Foat, MR Assister @ Output

This is gonna to be some stuff. James Blake’s label will be setting up shop at Output for a night that is sure to be funky and full of house. Be prepared to feel the range of house beats from the 1-800-Dinosaur team, as they are known to mix it up across the house board.

Umek @ Pacha NYC

Pacha goes behind the Iron Curtain this Friday. Slovenia’s Umek brings an infectious vibe that will make it impossible for almost anyone to dance. The only way you won’t be dancing is if Pacha is too packed to move. With beats like this, Umek’s crowd will most likely find a way to groove.

What So Not @ Webster Hall

The Australian duo should be providing heavy doses of bass at Webster Hall. They range from dirty hip hop/house hybrids before going into dirty electronic bass. Then, they will throw in Toto’s “Africa” for the hell of it. Friday is shaping up in New York City!

Zen Freeman @ Lavo

Looking for a little more electronic in your set tonight? Consider Zen Freeman. If you’re not too familiar with Zen you may remember him as the producer working with Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul on “Dance Bitch.” When it’s not Aaron Paul, Zen’s sets contain more electronic music that should do well with the crowd at Lavo.

Vicetone @ Slake

If you’re looking for a night of trance it would be hard to top the duo of Vicetone. The “Ensemble” guys have been dropping killer sets for a while now. With their recent work at Ultra behind them, expect more quality sets to come from them. Slake could be one of the best spots of the night with Vicetone in the building.

Also Consider: Sonny Fodera, Love & Logic, Joe Pompeo @ Spektrum NYC, Eric Duncan with JDH, Andrew Blancato @ Cameo Gallery, Ancient Puzzle Arts, Alex Burkat, Chakana @ Glasslands Gallery, Quentin Harris & Hector Romero at Le Bain, Afterwork Latin Grooves Happy Hour feat. Sonido Costeno @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s in New York, Johan Ekman @ Chrystie 141, Nosaj Thing / Martyn / Sebastian Tamayo @ Verboten, Leon @ Sankeys, Stacey Pullen @ Marquee

Saturday, June 7

Be Yourself with Danny Tenaglia/ Silent Servant/ The Black Madonna @ Output

Danny Tenaglia will be bringing an extended set to the main stage while the other acts are in the Panther Room. Danny is back in his original hometown, so anything could happen. As always, Output seems to be the place for quality deep and tech house in New York City.

Skrillex @ Governors Ball

Skrillex will be closing out the Honda stage at the four-stage festival. If you’re going to be attending definitely watch Sonny do his thing. However, you may want to consider hanging out at the Honda stage all day. With sets from RJD2, Disclosure and Childish Gambino, fans of the electronic scene could be in for a great day of music.

Paul Oakenfold: Trance Mission @ Pacha NYC

The legend is back. With his mission being trance, Pacha will be in for a special kind of night. Oakenfold has been tearing up venues for decades now. He may not be at the top of his game anymore, but he can still put down a solid set worth checking out on a Saturday night.

Electric Beach Pres Jaytech @ Slate

More quality trance will be hitting the city courtesy of Jaytech. His recent remix of Myon & Shane 54’s “Under Your Cloud” has been racking up plays all over the Internet. With blistering beats and varying sounds Jaytech could walk away as the under the radar set of the weekend in the city.

Max Vangeli @ Marquee

Miami via Moldova’s Max Vangeli will be bringing the big room good vibes to Marquee on Saturday. His brand of progressive house will be fun to see how it mixes with the glitzier Marquee crowd. It should be a sight to see for sure.

Also Consider: Getter @ Webster Hall, Digital Lab @ Lavo, Alex From Tokyo and Paul Raffaele @ Cielo, Reconstrvct XIX @ Reconstrvct, Blkmarket Membership Daytime Party with 3 Wise Men + NIL @ The Paper Box, Sheik ‘N’ Beik presents Music is 4 Lovers @ Output, Till Von Sein / Italoboyz / Nicola Zanatta / Eduardo Castillo @ Verboten, Kevin Saunderson / Christian Smith @ Sankeys

Sunday, June 8

50 Cent @ Webster Hall

So, this isn’t electronic music. But it is 50 Cent, so that’s saying something, right? As long as 50 doesn’t come out like he did with that first pitch at the Mets game a few days ago, he should be okay. Recently, G-Unit reunited and there was an alleged robbery onstage during their performance. What will they do next?!

Satoshi Tomiie, Sideburn and Zenbi @ The Panther Room

Techno and house will be on full display at The Panther Room on Sunday. Satoshi Tomiie and Zenbi have distinct sounds that should play well with Output’s next door, sister venue. The Panther Room could be moving with sets from these guys. It’s hard not to when they are on the decks.

Verboten Brunch: Yousef / Cause: Effect + Friends @ Verboten

Can you make it to be a human being by noon? If so, Verboten’s new Brunch series is starting to pick up. The cabaret bar will be open with what they are calling “killer food and amazing tunes.” Admission is free and food is served until 8 p.m. Add Yousef to the mix and you have one solid way to combat the hangover you developed all weekend.

Also Consider: Été d’Amour w/ Eric ‘Dunks’ Duncan, Brennan Green & NoShow @ Le Bain At The Standard in New York, Mister Sunday w/ Eamon Harkin & Justin C @ Industry City, Remedy with Patrick Russell @ TBA – Brooklyn, Sunset Discotheque feat. The Deep DJs, Luka Son of Wolf, Will Buck, Salinger, Free Radicals @ Rooftop 48
