New York City Weekend Preview: May 22-25, 2014

DJOYbeat Event Spotlight:

Official EDC NY Pre-Party: Tommy Trash @ Pacha NYC – Friday, May 23

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer. That usually means New York City turns down to beat the heat, right? Absolutely not! Not even two massive festivals can keep New York City from going hard this weekend. In fact, Pacha NYC will have things kicking off for the EDCers looking to start a few hours early.

Tommy Trash will work them into a frenzy with his blistering mixes. Pacha is usually crowded on the weekends. Expect it to be even more crowded with the out-of-town crowd in full effect. Tickets are only $10 before midnight. Pacha likes to tout that they “Pregame harder than you party.” Find out if its true this Friday.

New York City’s Weekend Calendar:

Thursday, May 22

Input – Fixed presents: Simian Mobile Disco (DJ Set), Bicep and more @ Output

Output is home to quality music and a certain breed of music fan. Leave your phones in your pockets as they are anti-photography. If that’s your thing, check out SMD’s killer mix as well as a strong support bill.

Just Blaze @ Webster Hall

Just Blaze! If that two-word shout out hits you in the music feels you know how important Just Blaze is. He’ll be headlining a solid DJ bill at Webster. Hip-hop nights aren’t usually as packed. You might be able to get some good space on the floor for this one.

Dance.Here.Now. presents Hobo @ Cielo

Expect a night of techno and dancefloor movers from Hobo and Co. He said he’s looking to have fun on the floor this year while touring. Dress trendy and get in on the Hobo action.

Also Consider:

Fareoh @ Lavo NYC, Giant Step presents #Offline with Q-Tip and Natasha Diggs @ Sankeys New York

Friday, May 23

Electric Daisy Carnival NY Pre-Party with Adam Beyer, Francois K and more @ Output

Adam Beyer and Francois K bring their talents to the mainstage to kick off EDC in their own way. The veterans will be doing their thing like Output usually does: fun, yet slightly different. Remember the rave culture before hitting the big stages the next day.

Girls & Boys presents Koan Sound @ Webster Hall

Looking for some DnB/dubstep to kick off the weekend? Seeking out bright colors and PLURfection? So will tons of others, but that’s OK! Be sure to get there early and stake out your spot on the floor. Webster is known to get packed early.

Chocolate Puma @ Slake

The house legends bring their signature Dutch sound to quench your bass needs. Nothing makes a house show like a spaced-out room. Slake has got that for you. Turn off the judgmental part of your brain and get down like it was ’93 and “Give It Up” was spinning for the first time.

Audiofly @ Marquee

The duo make their debut at Marquee, and what a weekend to start. With so much big sounds going down this summer it’s good to get some underground sounds in as well. Audiofly are sure to mix things up. If you’re looking for a different sound before EDC, check these guys out.

Cristian Arango MDW Kick Off Party @ Cielo

Cristian Arango has been playing larger venues throughout New York City for a while now. It should be interesting to see what he brings to the intimate setting of Cielo. The venue is almost always a fun time. It should be a great place to start summer off in the city.

Also Consider:

Mister Saturday Night’s House Party, A Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York Special @ Mister Saturday Night’s House, Matt Goldman @ Lavo NYC, Cirque Fridays Feat. Robbie Wilde @ Highline Ballroom, Nickodemus @ Brooklyn Bowl, Max Cooper @ Glasslands Gallery, “Soiree de Classe” Feat. T-Vice @ Sounds of Brazil/ S.O.B.’s, Benoit and Sergio @ Cameo Gallery, Marcos Cabral @ Cameo Gallery, Luca Bacchetti @ Sankeys New York, Maksim @ Sankeys New York

Saturday, May 24

Electric Daisy Carnival NY After Party with John Digweed and Art Department @ Output

Two of dance music’s veteran acts come to Brooklyn to cap off day one of EDC. It’s a bit ironic seeing Art Department on here after their tearing apart of big room DJs. Yet, it’s highly doubtful that they’ll be doing some simple button pushing.

R3hab: The Official EDC NY Afterparty (Day 1) @ Pacha NYC

For the official afterparty, you’re going to have to head back to Pacha. Expect a packed venue. A real packed venue. Pacha always packs in the crowd, but with the tourists coming, it will be packed like no other night. Possibly more than Tommy Trash’s set.

EDX @ Marquee

EDX knows how to play to big room venues. He should be right at home at Marquee. With a massive dancefloor, you should be able to have some space to enjoy EDX’s brand of house mixes.

Steve Powers @ Lavo NYC

New York’s Steve Powers will be bringing big room to Lavo. Be in the mood for progressive house and fancy dress. Lavo can be strict on the dress code, so get polish up and be prepare to rub elbows with a pretty ritzy crowd.

Escort (DJ Set) @ Glasslands Gallery

Disco’s answer to the Polyphonic Spree will take over with a DJ set this weekend. You will be hard pressed to find a funkier set Saturday night. If you’re bummed about missing Chromeo last weekend, be sure to check Escort out.

Also Consider:

Brite Nites presents UNKNWN @ Webster Hall, Grimblee @ Webster Hall, Tommy Boy Tribe presents Marcos Carnaval Friends @ Cielo, Todd Edwards @ Slake, Latin Saturdays @ Club Glazz, Le Bain presents Willie Graff all night @ Le Bain At The Standard, Smif N Wessun @ Irving Plaza, The Mister Saturday Night House Party @ Mister Saturday Night’s House, Speedy J/Lucy and tons more @ Verboten, Bassment presents: Greg Beato @ Cameo Gallery

Sunday, May 25

Electric Daisy Carnival NY After Party with Tale of Us/Chymera @ Output

The funk won’t stop with a trip to Brooklyn Sunday night. Once EDC shuts down a fresh burst of funk from two of Europe’s signature electric funk acts. If Output could be described in a sound it may be from these two acts.

Sander Kleinenberg @ Verboten

Looking for some Sunday afternoon disco? If so, then you should check out the new Sunday brunch series from Verboten. If you can muster up the energy to be back on your feet by noon check out Sander’s set. Best of luck after this weekend.

Official EDC Afterparty: Adventure Club @ Pacha NYC

Pacha is teasing some other potential surprises on the bill. Even if there aren’t, the Canadian duo’s brand of electro house should be able to help burn out the last bit of energy left inside any EDC festival goer. As with every Pacha night, be prepared for a packed house that won’t clear out until at least 4 am.

Also Consider:

Mister Sunday @ Industry City, Blkmarket Membership @ Le Bain At The Standard, Danny Krivit @ Webster Hall, Horse Meat Disco: Memorial Day Weekend @ Cielo, Memorial Day Sunday Noise Rave @ Fontana’s
