About Riff Raff’s Tiki Bar

If the cold winds of NYC have you thinking of white sand beaches and boat drinks, but you can’t get off the island you’re on for the one you want to be on, Riff Raff’s Tiki Bar could be a temporary respite.

Located in the basement of Asian fusion restaurant The Hurricane Club (which oddly enough is not a nightclub) Riff Raff’s Tiki Bar (which is a bit more than just a bar) is a Polynesian, island themed, tropical watering hole with a limited capacity and a love it or hate reputation.

The tiny (capacity is 72) interior features vaulted ceilings, built to resemble the inside of a tiki hut, and decked out in Malaysian tapestry, glass chandeliers, lots of tropical looking plants, and dark woods.  Black leather banquettes wrap around the walls, and the bar serves a wide variety of fruity, sweet, and themed drinks.

The music is open format, and you can expect a mix of pop and rock, hip hop, house, dance and whatever else the DJ has in their crates, with the occasional live appearance by acts like Chromeo.  There isn’t a dance floor, so much as there is space where there aren’t tables.  It’s intimate, so expect it to be packed.

For the people who love it, it’s the tropical atmosphere, the pink flamingo drink cups, the face paint, the coconut bras, the general out of control feeling the place has.  For the people who hate it, it’s the bouncers, dealing with getting in, and prices.

The crowd tends to be in their twenties and thirties, the young, pretty people, yuppies, scenesters, and hipsters who come for he irony.  With space at a premium, the doormen can be choosy, but tables can be reserved.
